Interview with Team AX Athlete Sarah Caplinger

Brandon Hahn June 4, 2013 Athletic Xtreme News

Life is full of craziness. We all have hectic schedules and would love to have a little more time on their hands. Sarah would prefer just that. Why? Well, it’s time to check out this interview with Sarah Caplinger.

Why did you start exercising?

Exercising has always been a part of my life. It wasn’t until January 2012 that I decided to take fitness to the next level and really push myself to the extreme. I decided it was time to kick into high gear and prove to myself that I had what it took to get on stage and compete in the NPC Bikini division.

What led you to begin competing?

I wanted a large goal, a goal I knew was going to take time and dedication. One night I remember turning to Dan (my soon to be husband) and saying, “I’m going to get on stage and compete.” I was looking at some pictures of a recent NPC Bikini competition and I wanted that “glow” that the competitors had.

What is life like outside of exercise?

I am a full time Corporate Interior Designer. When I am not changing my house around all the time, I enjoy spending a lot of time with my friends and family. I do not have a lot of spare time during the week, so I make sure my weekends are jam packed with activities that keep my friends and family close. Some of my favorite activities include boating, traveling, and anything outdoors. On Sundays’ we usually go to my grandmothers’ house for our customary Italian dinner of macaroni and gravy!!

You are getting married soon, what has that been like?

This has been the hardest obstacle to date. Working full time, commuting for two hours a day, training for two hours a day, and having to prepare multiple meals has been crazy enough. Add wedding planning in there and it takes it to a whole other level. I had to make fitness a priority and find new ways to keep myself motivated. I can be honest and say it has been very challenging. I have had to make everything else in my life work around my life style. A BIG help was the support from Dan. He helped me with everything from meal preparation to stamping and licking envelopes for the wedding. Having a support system at home is very important. It all paid off as I took 1st place in my class on April 27th at the NPC Power House Classic in New Haven, CT. Wedding plans are still coming along and we are getting married June 14th!

Does your future husband compete?

Dan does not compete, although I ask him all the time. He should think about it because he ends up eating like me for the 16 week contest prep anyway! He lives a really healthy lifestyle and trains hard in the gym. Maybe one day he will take the stage.

What does a typical week of training look like for you?

During contest prep I typically wake up early for at least 30 minutes of cardio. Then, after work I return to strength train, followed by more cardio. One day a week I train with my coach, and on Sunday mornings, I practice posing.

Each month my training schedule would get critiqued as needed to get myself ready for the stage.

In the “off season”, I drop the morning cardio, and focus more on building/toning muscle.

What are your future plans in this sport?

I plan to continue making progress and take the stage again. My goal is to take 1st on a national stage. I plan to continue to represent the best I have to offer and to motivate and prove to others that they too can accomplish so much even under such a tight schedule.

Thank you for taking time out of your crazy schedule to talk Sarah.
