Last Updated: Jan 11, 2012 11:17AM MST
NAC is a form of the amino acid Cysteine that is naturally produced by the body. Because it enhances the production of the enzyme glutathione, one of the body's powerhouse antioxidants, it is a vital component of the detoxification pathways of the liver and intestines. N-acetyl cysteine remains the therapy of choice in the treatment of acetaminophen poisoning. In such cases, it prevents depletion of an important protective antioxidant, glutathione, which protects the liver from damage.
